Marine Veteran Phillip Smith announced as Dearborn’s 2022 Veteran of the Year

The Dearborn Allied War Veterans Council (DAWVC) has selected the 2022 Dearborn Veteran of the Year, United States Marine Corps veteran Phillip Smith.
Smith will be honored during the City’s Veteran’s Day ceremony at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 11 in the Michael A. Guido Theater at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center, 15801 Michigan Ave. The public is invited to attend.

Smith said he appreciates this honor and thanks the DAWVC Veteran of the Year Selection Committee for the recognition.

“I am committed to helping the veteran community and their families. This has always been a passion of mine, and I will continue to do anything I can to assist.” Smith added, “I am honored by the DAWVC’s Veteran of the Year Selection Committee for this great honor and I look forward to utilizing this role to help better represent the veteran’s community.”

The selection committee selected Smith for his years of service to the veteran community in Dearborn. After serving 27 years in the Marine Corps, Smith served as a Veterans Service Officer (VSO) advocating for both veterans and their families. Also, for the past 26 years, Smith has been involved in the Toys for Tots program and currently serves as the Local Coordinating Officer.

Scott Rumfield who is the new commander of the DAWVC stated, “Phil’s unwavering dedication to the veterans across the southeast Michigan region is inspiring and he is a proud representative of the Dearborn veteran community. I look forward to working together this next year as we serve the Dearborn veterans community.”

In honoring a Veteran of the Year, the DAWVC raises awareness of the tireless volunteer efforts of local veterans and thanks them in a meaningful way through mentor, peer, and community recognition.
